Edgar F. Rolf a great- grandson of Ephraim Dains, was born Sept. 14, 1844 in Lowell, Kent, MI to Samuel P. Rolf and Susan I. Dains, he enlisted on his 18th birthday in Vergennes, Kent, MI to the Union Army. Enlistment date was Sept. 14, 1862, 6th Mich. Cav. Company M. Serving under James H. Kidd from Ionia, MI. The 6th Mich. Cav. also known as the Wolverines fought many battles including Gettysburg and Antietem. After the war the 6th Mich. Cav. was moved to the west to join up with Gen. George A. Custer. Kidd became Custer's right arm. The fight with the indians was not to kind to Edgar. He was captured and had the souls of his feet burned by the indians. He was rescued and mustered out Nov. 24, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. His pension record shows him as invalid in 1867, he died between 1867 and 1869. He never truelly walked after he came home to Lowell, MI. He died from a morphine overdose and is interned in the same line as his father, mother, uncle and brother. He has a chunk of fieldstone as a headstone right now as does his brother.
